If Your Hosting Down
“This is crap!! my hosting is down!! and they said no problem with their network” that’s my friend said to me last month when he found his site can’t opened. Then i try to visit his site, but its opened in my PC, what happened with his site?
The terms “down” can mean: database server problem, mail server problem, FTP problem or web problem (port 80).
But in here i’m focused into common problem that show message like “Cannot Found Server” in your browser.
I think if your site cannot be accessed only by you, so there is several possibilities.
1. Problem with your ISP connection.
If your site can access in other place but not in yours, so there is possibility problem about your internet connection.
What i’m talk about here is not only about poor connection. But also others factor / situation like, DNS table updating, DNS cache poisoning, ISP blocking, and many others.
If you want to check, just using proxy or some free Virtual Private Network (VPN) to ensure that only you cannot access your site or ask your friends that using different ISP to access your site.
2. Domain Propagation
This is rare situation, but sometimes we not realize that if we moving our hosting with not properly, so there is domain propagation time. You can read much explanation about domain propagation here.
It will takes about 24 – 72 hours if we not properly moving our domain. When we moving our domain to other host, so DNS will change, and to keep your web running smoothly when propagation happen is do not remove all configuration and files in old hosting. Each ISP in the world may need different time to resolve. If you want to see the real time changing, just test it in Network Tools, update in there only takes few seconds (ping result between Network Tools and your ISP may different due time to resolve).
3. Your Machine Configuration.
Thats mean your Personal Computer (PC) that you using to access. One of these problem is about firewall configuration, or your browser. Error 406 code will appear if you had problem with this. The reason is because your browser not accept any data returning from web server, usually for security reason. But this is very infrequently happen. One of this case i saw it happen in cpanel hosting access. When somebody access their cpanel through http://domain/cpanel with Firefox 3, so they will got error 406 message. They need to access into direct port (http://domain:2082) for running smoothly.
If you had these problem, so trying to using different browser, or try to turn off your firewall for temporary to check your site.
4. Check Your Hosting Server Connection.
Instead for checkin, this is also good for proof for your hosting provide if the result is network down. You can test your network hosting through these site:
- http://www.selfseo.com/website_speed_test.php
- http://www.websitegoodies.com/tools/speed-test.php
- http://network-tools.com/
Now You Can Said That
If your hosting passed that 4 test in above, so now you can sure that the problem is in your Hosting Provider. Call them and ask explanation for that.
